What ULEZ compliance means
For cars, it is Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel. In practice that means petrol cars first registered in or after 2006, and diesel cars first registered on or after 1 September 2015. Zero-emission cars (electric, hydrogen, fuel-cell) are always compliant. Hybrids meet the standard of their petrol or diesel engine.
What it costs if you are non-compliant
£12.50 every day you drive inside the London ULEZ. The zone now covers every London borough out to the M25. The charge applies seven days a week, holidays included, between 00:00 and 24:00. Drive in for one minute on a Sunday morning, that is £12.50. Drive in every working day and you are at £3,250 a year.
Other Clean Air Zones charge similar daily fees. Birmingham CAZ-D is £8 for cars. Sheffield is £10. Bath is £9. They all use the same Euro 4 petrol / Euro 6 diesel compliance standard.
How we check
We hit DVLA’s Vehicle Enquiry Service for your car’s fuel type and first registration date, then apply the ULEZ rules. This is identical to TfL’s own compliance check. If our result disagrees with TfL, theirs is the authoritative one (but it never disagrees, the rules are the same).
When the check is worth running
Buying a used petrol from 2005 or earlier: probably not compliant, ask yourself if you ever drive into a CAZ. Buying a used diesel from before September 2015: definitely not ULEZ compliant. Buying any used hybrid: depends on the underlying engine type and date.

What is the ULEZ daily charge?

Are motorcycles ULEZ compliant?

Will the standard change?
TfL has confirmed Euro 4 petrol / Euro 6 diesel as the long-term standard. The boundary expanded in 2023 but the emissions standard itself has not changed. The other UK CAZ schemes match the same standard.
